How to Restore Your Show Desktop Shortcut

One of my user in my company recently request for IT Support. The problem is that she accidently delete the "show desktop" icon in the quick launch bar. And she want in restored.

Well in this post i will share a little tips i found at microsoft site about how to respond to this problem.

The Show Desktop icon is not an ordinary program shortcut. If the icon is deleted, the procedure for re-creating the icon is not obvious. To manually re-create the Show Desktop icon, follow these steps:

1. Click Start , click Run, type notepad, and then click OK.

2. In Notepad, type the following text on individual lines:
[Shell]Command=2IconFile=explorer.exe,3[Taskbar]Command=ToggleDesktop

3. On the File menu, click Save As, and then save the file to your desktop as Show Desktop.scf. Note Notepad might automatically append a .txt extension to the file name. Remove this extension if present. The file name should be Show Desktop.scf.The file must now be moved to the correct folder in the user profile to appear in the Quick Launch toolbar. To manually do this, use one of the following methods.

Method 1
1. Use the mouse to drag the Show Desktop.scf icon to the Quick Launch toolbar or another location where you want the shortcut to appear.
2. Click Move Here.

Method 2
1. Use Windows Explorer to locate the following folders: Microsoft Windows 95 and Microsoft Windows 98Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick LaunchMicrosoft Windows NT, Microsoft Windows 2000, and Microsoft Windows XPC:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch Note Username refers to the account name where you want to put the icon.
2. Use the mouse to drag the Show Desktop.scf file to the Quick Launch folder.
3. Click Move Here.

Are You Sure They Are Unusefull People ?

If you watch the 5th season of the apprentice then you maybe remember one of the apprentice "Brent". Brent is an attorney that have what i think as not so good habit. First of all he's fat and he ate alot during every meeting that his team had. His idea is rather outrageous and he always make their team late in their morning briefing.

So what his fellow team mates do with him ? Because all of the team members agree that brent will screw up the task so they always make brent to work in tasks that they know for sure it's mean nothing for the project. So if he screw up it does'nt hurt the team. "Synergy" the team name, manage to do just like that in a couple of episode. In my opinion they are a very good team except for brent of course :) . But something came up, in one of the episode they lost. And they must let someone to get fired. But whom ?

Of course they want brent to be fired but they know that brent has a good argument to fight because he does'nt get any change to work for the team. And brent, well he's ready to fight.

In the board room, Mr. Trump give this lesson to synergy. Every one even like brent must had talent or ability to do something for the team. Don't let anyone on your team think he's useless.

The lesson that Mr. Trump gave to synergy is also means a lot to me. And i learn from it. Sometime as a leader of a project or a team, we must face a lot of people with different attitude, background, etc. We even find someone as annoying as brent. When we face this matter it's our "protective" nature to try to make someone that we think will be the troublemaker for the project not to do anything that will endangered the team and the project.

Well as a leader i realize that to do something like this is very wrong. As a leader it's our responsibility not only to had a successfull project but also a successfull team. Give everyone a chance to prove and learn something in the team. Everybody is usefull in some way. And it's our duty to place them in the place where they can use all their potential.

But what happen if they always screw up in every task and chances that you gave ?
well you can fired them because you can't find the place for them. But atleast you came up to be the good guy and already try. Less fight needed to fired them in what i think.

So what happen to brent ? well he got fired any way because he consistently attack their project leader and the team as a whole and not because his un-usefull for the team.
